I ran into a bug. If you try and use a columnset while clientbound to a WCF Service you will receive a "SynchronizeCells failed" error for every row of data returned. I was able to reproduce this by opening the 2009 R2 - WebGridSamples \ ClientBinding_WcfServices.aspx project and setting up a columnset.
I'm running Windows 7 x64, UI ASP Suite 2009 R2, VS2008
Using your suggestion, I modified the ClientBinding_WcfServices.aspx to use columnset (sample attached). However, I could not reproduce the issue "SynchornizeCells failed". The sample runs without any issue even with the column set feature.
