Is it possible to span columns without using a columnset?

I.E.

Col 1     Col 2      Col3      Col4

Item      item       Item       Item

<--Item--->     Item       Item

<--Item--->     Item       Item

Item      item       Item       Item

<--Item--->     Item       Item

Item      item       Item       Item

<--Item--->     Item       Item

<--Item--->     Item       Item

 

This would vary depending upon the data.

That is why I cannot use a columnset.
