So the answer is:

HTML 4.0 Transitional
XHTML 1.0 Transitional
HTML5, defined as <!DOCTYPE html>, with WebGrid 8 on newer browsers

But neither HTML4.01 strict nor any other strict DOCTYPE.

In version 8, WebGrid has been refined to fully support the latest web standards. This allows developers to use WebGrid features in their HTML5 doc type web application.

You can evaluate WebGrid with the HTML5 doc type by browse to one of WebGrid live sample such as: Enterprise.aspx sample. IE9 doesn’t ignore the doctype and doesn’t fallback to Quirks mode.

As far as I know, HTML5 doc type does trigger standards mode in browsers. Although it is not yet an official standard but all major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera) continue to add new HTML5 features to their latest versions.

Hmm. You mean the <!DOCTYPE html>? I'm afraid that is not understood by even IE8 or IE9. It might simply get ignored and the browser falls back to Quirks mode, transitional mode or some other compatibility mode then. That's exactly what we want to avoid. We want to be compatible with as many browsers as possible (without much testing), so the only way to achieve that is by making sure not to fall back to such old modes - so that we notice the problems in IE already. HTML5 is no standard yet, so we would have to set it to HTML4.01 strict, but that is still not supported as you say. We might need to switch to another vendor then.

The Intersoft WebUI Studio 2012 R2 for ASP.NET doesn’t support HTML 4.01 strict doctype. However, it now supports html5 doctype.

I made a test by creating a page containing simple WebGrid and uses XHTML Strict doctype. So far there is no problem when the browser renders the page. However, the test is not thoroughly done to all the features of WebGrid.

I will forward this to WebGrid development team in order to confirm whether WebGrid support the strict doctype or not; if not, will these type of doctype will be supported in the future?

Hi Yudi, thanks for your reply. So in other words, any Strict doctype is not supported. Did I get that right? Is support for that planned for the future? We need to get away from these old Transitional doctypes and right now only WebGrid stops us from doing so.

WebGrid supports HTML 4.0 Transitional doctype and XHTML 1.0 Transitional doctype. The sample of WebGrid shows that there are no issues appearing on those two doctype.

What DOCTYPE versions are (fully) supported by your current release of the WebGrid? We would like to switch to HTML 4.01 Strict and know the the current version of WebGrid we have (version 6 I think) only supports HTML 4.0 Transitional. With "fully support" I don't mean to manually enter quirks mode or stuff like that.

Can you give a list of all fully supported DOCTYPEs and the known limitations related to your control? With limitations I mean for example using 100% width or height and auto-resizing features etc. In some other threads you say some features don't work, because "it's a limitation of the DOCTYPE", so I would like to know these details before switching DOCTYPE in the entire application and before buying a new WebGrid version.
